Most people think of a white-collar worker as being a person who performs managerial, administrative, or some type of professional position at a desk or in an office. As a result, the position is typically perceived as being performed in a brick-and-mortar building. Thirty years ago, working in a brick-and-mortar building was the norm, as the concept of working outside of the office was unfathomable. Generally, people would leave their homes and travel to a building to work, such as in the movie “Stepford Wives”, where all the men would leave home at the same time and travel to work.
Fast forward to the early 1990s, when the internet become viable to the public, although it emerged in the United States (US) in the 1970s. As a result of the internet, personal computers, email, and “surfing the net” became available to the average household. The 1990s was an exciting time for the internet and soon companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Google, and eBay launched their businesses and are still around today.
For those of us who grew up in this era, we would have never imagined the future would be what it is today. People in my generation never had cell phones, some people had pagers that received transmissions and would beep or vibrate. We are the children of the card catalog and the Dewey Decimal System, a system used to organize books in the library into 10 groups from 000 – 999. Generation X were the first generation to use caller id, *82 (block your number), and other analog phone features. We were also the last generation to use pay phones and call the operator for assistance.
The onset of the internet and other tech companies challenged the status quo of the era. No longer were some people using file cabinets, typewriters, and MS-DOS people began using email, laptops, and Microsoft Office. These office tools have changed the way in which people work. Today, many white-collar workers have the option of working from home, flex schedules, and the ability to work remote indefinitely.
Whether in the last twenty years or during the pandemic, we have seen an exponential increase in those who can work remotely. With the ability of people to work remote, some have suggested it allows:
- Freedom to work from any location.
- Freedom and control over your schedule.
- More personal and family time.
- A more productive work environment.
- Saves money on gas, food, and other items.
The freedom to work from any location has permitted a new lifestyle to emerge. One that allows you to travel and work simultaneously. Hotels around the world have recognized the need for these types of arrangements where you can check email, socialize with other professionals, and hold meetings in an environment that fuels your creativity and passion.
